I live in Idaho and have a concealed weapons permit so i have carried every day for the last 5 years, I miss San Diego and want to return but I have questions about firearms considering i have grown accustomed to having them with me all the time. First the shotgun question I have a shotgun that I sawed off the barrel to 18.5 inches just above legal and have a pistol grip on but i was worried that since I modified the barrel myself it may still be illegal. also can i keep this under the seat of my truck if it is unloaded? Also I had a couple questions about handguns first of all i know you have to lock them in a case while in the cab of my truck, if locked in a case do they need to be unloaded? also do i need to keep the magazines somewhere else, or is in the case ok? If i decide to open carry my pistol do i need to step out of my parked car to remove it from the case and holster it? or can i do that while sitting in the car? And one final question I have a kel-tec .380 which has a belt clip like a pocket knife, can i just clip this to my belt and leave the magazine in my pocket or do I need a physical holster? Oh one more thing when carrying my 9mm in a holster are there any certain parts of the gun that the holster has to cover or does it require a strap? I like the very minimalistic xd subcompact holsters but dont want to be in the wrong.

I know its restrictive but i cant picture myself never carrying again I thought of one more question as well I know you can open carry with a belt holster but what about a shoulder holster? An uncovered shoulder holster is considered open carry in Idaho but then again its the wild west up here

I'm getting ready to start my job as a Bail Enforcement Agent (Bounty Hunter) and i need to know how old you have to be to open carry a handgun in kansas cause im having trouble finding it all it mentions is conceal and carry not open and how old you have to be to buy one. im 18 by the way. oh and is it legal to buy a handgun from a friend or relative or is it legal to receive one from them as a gift?

I am from Florida, hiking in Georgia.

My grandfather who has passed away left me with a couple of guns in his will. These guns are not currently registered to me.

Am I allowed to take a handgun for personal safety purposes hiking with me? Let alone a different state.

I do not have a concealed weapons permit.

If so, how should I transport the gun? (Again, no concealed weapons permit) And since we are on the subject of these particular guns, what are my rights as far as carrying one in my vehicle going forward?

You ask why 10mm, it's really for the stopping power (for both handgun hunting and self defense).

The .45 and .40 I haven't ruled out and there seem to be valid points about comparable stopping power and ammo costs.

I've considered the Glock 20, but I'm unsure. One says it blows up, but many people really like it, so I've heard mixed things. I kind of like how Glocks feel.

While where the safety release is is a main concern for a left-hander, having a magazine release on both sides would be nice as well. It's probably too much to ask to try to find a gun that ejects the brass out the left side.

I wouldn't really consider learning to shoot right-handed as my main hand since I'm also left-eyed, but I of course will learn to shoot with both hands with all weapons I own.

I'm open to .40 and .45 calibers, but the 10mm is a good dual caliber for stopping power in both humans and relatively large animals compared to smaller calibers.


This question was posted 2 years ago and, at the time, the answer was a definite "no". I know there's been some recent changes in legislature but I'm still very unclear on the subject.

My question refers to concealed carry of handguns, not rifles or other hunting-oriented weapons.

I am a CCW holder in Florida and Georgia reciprocates with Florida on concealed weapons permits. So I'm legal to carry elsewhere in Georgia, but I'm not sure about national forests. I'll be camping/hiking in Desoto Falls & the Appalachian trail later on this month and I want to do my homework before I arrive.
OK, here's the answer. When I posted this, I was waiting for a callback from the Forest Supervisor's office. Apparently Georgia isn't like Florida in that, when they say they'll call back, they actually do call back. (Florida never calls back). So I was told that the recent changes in legislate applies more to National Parks than to National Forests. National Forests fall under Georgia's laws. But the answer is....

Georgia's laws DO permit a concealed weapons permit holder to carry a concealed firearm in National Forests, so long as you do not enter a federal building. He reminded me that the visitor's center is a federal building and therefore off-limits. But as far as camping and hiking go, you're good to go so long as you have either a Georgia permit, or a permit from a reciprocating state (such as Florida).


I'm going hiking in Tenn this dec and was wondering if i could carry a Handgun with me if it's not concealed? I live in Ga.


I have read a little into it but the details get a little hairy. This is what I have read so far:
"(1) A person may not wear or carry a dangerous weapon of any kind concealed on or about the person.
(2) A person may not wear or carry a dangerous weapon, chemical mace, pepper mace, or a tear gas device openly with the intent or purpose of injuring an individual in an unlawful manner."

So do this mean it is legal (or an arguable case) to carry a 'weapon' as defined by:
"'Weapon' includes a dirk knife, bowie knife, switchblade knife, star knife, sand-club, metal knuckles, razor, and nunchaku.
(ii) "Weapon" does not include:
1. a handgun; or
2. a penknife without a switchblade."
in plain sight?

In short (I guess this would have been easier to ask), could I carry a fixed blade bowie knife in a leather sheathe unconcealed on my belt for self defense with no intent or purpose of injuring an individual in an unlawful manner? I have seen some people do this and I was not sure on the legalities of it.

Oh and the "unlawful manner" part, is there really a "lawful manner" of injuring an individual on purpose? Seems redundant to me.


Again, I know i'm asking very very noob questions, but you have to start somewhere, and I'm trying to learn as much as I can online, without looking like an idiot to the range masters while target shooting and trying to decide on a weapon. I'd rather look stupid to strangers, and besides, some of you guys have really good information that can help me.

Ok here goes, for example....I saw someone with a 1911 today and saw that the hammer was pulled back/engaged/pulled back. I asked him if he feels safe with the hammer pinned back all day with concealed carry and he said he had no problem. The M1911 apparently has 2 or 3 safeties, slide safety, grip safety, etc. But my question is if you rack the 1911, it automatically pulls the hammer back to ready/fire mode, however if you decide to hit the hammer release button, or just pull the hammer back down...will the gun still fire when the hammer is not engaged? I know the gun won't fire if the hammer does not move, but isnt the 1911, or similar guns D.A.? Which means when they pull the trigger, isnt the job of the trigger to pull back the exposed hammer and then bang it against the bullet? So if thats the case, why keep the hammer engaged and ready at all times? Why not rack the slide, keep one in the chamber, hit the hammer release, and then if you have to fire the weapon, when you pull the trigger the hammer will go back to firing position and then slam down hard therefore creating force to discharge the weapon.

I guess i'm just wondering why hammers are exposed in the first place. I know a manually hammer draw is better on a revolver because it relieves the tension and transforms into a hairtrigger, but does manually cocking the hammer on a semi-auto do the same thing? does it bring the trigger back some so you only need to do a hair-line squeeze to discharge the round? You always see in a movies with a character, holding a semi-auto, talking to the badguy, and the badguy says something the cop didnt want to hear, and the cop pulls back the hammer clearly saying "i'm about to shoot you", but if they dont pull that hammer back, the gun will still fire because there is already one in the chamber...so why the need to pull the hammer back. and also, to add to that question, how can the hammer NOT be back if the gun is racked and cocked and ready to go, unless they did what i mentioned above, and hit the hammer release button? any help?

1) If I'm from or working for a State that does not require Bail Enforcement Licensing, but in State that does require licensing while looking for my Bail Jumper in that State, how do I Identify myself as a true Bail Enforcement Agent but have no license because I'm from another State? Do I at least let the police know who or what I am & where I'm from? Do I have to be in the proper age as well? 5) How does Bail Enforcement Background Checks works? How detailed are they? And what could prevent &/or disqualify me from becoming a Bail enforcement Agent, in any State?

Gun control has never one time in history been proven to equal crime control. All the statistics I can find show that throughout history gun control has never worked. Take Australia, Great Britain, and the District of Columbia for example. In the US the states with the lowest per-capita gun violence and overall crime rate are the ones with the almost non existing gun laws. If guns cause crime, why do states like Montana where 95% of the populace is armed have such a low crime rate. The number of guns in the US has been increasing year after year, yet our crime rate has been steadily dropping. 38 states have seen a drop in their crime rate after enacting concealed carry laws. DC banned handguns, immediately afterward their crime rate skyrocketed while the rest of the countries went down. California has a much higher than average gun violence, yet they have the strictest gun laws in the country. So since no one has ever been able to show a case of gun control equaling crime control why do 65% of liberals despise guns? What is your true agenda? Also, why do you mention hunting when referring to the second amendment? What part of the second mentions hunting or target shooting? We all would like to see less gun violence, so why will so many liberals not get behind something that works? When you get rid of guns you have an environment where only criminals are armed, therefore they are far braver than they would be if they knew there was a good chance their victims could be armed.
I am an Independent. My opinion is both parties are corrupt, so this has nothing to do with the right. I'm asking this based on a debate I participated in in school. I just want to gain some info as to why so many Liberals support stricter gun laws when the ones we have don't work. I am for background checks, and anything that will truly help keep criminals and the mentally ill from obtaining guns. I encourage you to do some research on the subject. For starters look and see who commits 0ver 80% of our gun crimes. Cars, cigarettes, swimming pools, and fast food kill far far far far more children than guns so do these things need to be banned? Ever wonder why school shootings didn't happen 50 years ago? Back then children had much more access to guns than they do now, they could walk into any hardware store, convenient stores,etc and buy them. Yet they never thought about shooting up their students. Do you need to do anything to purchase a gun in VA from a private sale? I would like to buy a gun from a friend of mine who is selling it. Do I need to have it registered or do something formally? I have read up a bit on purchasing in VA and they all discuss buying from a store or dealer. Also, once I purchase it do I need to do anything else? I read that you need a licenses for conceal carry (Concealed Handgun Permit) but I do not intend on carrying this. It is simply to have in the home.

So I have never shot a gun before. I am moving to downtown kansas city because I wanna be closer to the night life. However, as in most big cities, downtown is a somewhat shady spot. My brother and I were wanting to get a handgun, either a beretta or a glock, and a shotgun, either a charles daly or winchester. We're gonna go get our conceal and carry license and hit the shooting range. What recommendations would you make?

I'm not sure what to get for a dependable and easy to conceal handgun Conceal Carry. Right now I own three hand guns, I have a Ruger GP100 357 magnum revolver (way too big for CCW), A Ruger P89DC 9mm (too fat for CCW), and then a little Hi-Point C9 which is a smaller gun lengthwise, but it's actually fatter than my P89DC!
I like the look of the Bersa Thunder, but have never shot one. Is this a good reliable pistol, or do you have any other suggestions?

I want to take a trip From Kentucky to Washington DC. I want to take my 9mm Handgun I will be crossing into Tennessee and Virginia before going to DC. I do not have a concealed weapon license and will not keep it concealed. Can I Keep it in the glove box?

There are several points to consider as you answer:

1. States that have very strict gun control laws do not help to curb gun violence, but only make it easier for criminals to commit crimes with firearms.

2. Why is everyone who owns a firearm considered a hillbilly, redneck, militant, or nutcase? There are many responsible gun owners who are not rednecks or militants. And they're certainly not nutcases!

3. Gun Ownership is Not about hunting! So many Liberal politicians want to keep up the notion that its all about hunting. Its about self-defense, target practice, gun collecting, sports, home/family protection, and then hunting.

4. If the govt. starts taking away guns through gun confiscation, and this not about Obama paranoia, I mean like over a period of years through stricter gun legislation, what will you do about it?

5. Concealed Carry Should be allowed in all states with Shall Issue laws, allowing all persons who pass background checks, mental health tests, and safety training, and registration to be able to possess rifles and handguns.

6. And finally, should college students, or at least teachers, be allowed to have guns on campus, assuming they pass all the exams required to have a gun to reduce things like VA Tech and Columbine incidents from happening?


I am getting my CHL soon as well as joining the US Army. When I am off base but in my ACUs, will I be able to carry if I'm in a state that recognizes my CHL?

I've had people tell me to get a revolver (and i probably will at one point or another) but i also want a pistol with a metal frame and id like to learn to take it apart, clean it and maybe add some stuff to it.i have a friend who can help me get started especially when it comes to different attachments and upgrades ( he has...off the top of my head a hundred guns, and not one of them looks how it did when he bought them ) so any suggestions would be appreciated and if you have a link that would be cool too.

The Sig is a police trade in at a local dealer and I can get the SW for $320 or the Sig for $350? What should I go with? It will be my only handgun and I will use it for home protection and potentially conceal and carry.

For plinking: a 22 semi-auto
For home defense: .357 revolver
If you had to go into combat: a .45 ACP semi-auto

What if they've always enjoyed the outdoors?
Surely, if you go camping in the wilderness, you need a form of self-defense from any potential wild animals.

What if they come face to face with a dangerous wild animal and will be be killed unless they have a hunting rifle for defense?
Also, on the travel channel, they showed how bunches of black bears were roaming throught the streets and suburbs of New Jersey. If you live in a place where a bear can come out of the woods and roams the streets, you need some form of defense.

I understand them being barred from handguns since they can be concealed, but to ban them from even rifles or shotguns, would be taking away their right to defend themselves in case they go camping and they come face to face with something dangerous. And you can imagine how angry their loving relaitves would be if they got mauled to death all because they couldn't carry a rifle for self-defense.

So surely, there must be something they can carry for defense.
Otherwise, that's taking away their right to defend themselves.
If they get killed by a wild animal because they didn't have a rifle to defend themselves, then you can bet their relatives or friends would sue someone, and win...

I went to a gun store yesterday afternoon, and was interested in buying a gun for when I get my conceal carry permit in two weeks. I didn't buy anything because I don't know what to consider and what to stay away from. I also don't want to spend more than $600. I don't want a wheel gun or anything like that.
I really want something that is powerful but easy to control.

An obese prisoner in Harris County, Texas has been charged with illegal possession of a firearm after he was discovered to be hiding a 9mm pistol in between his rolls of fat, local media reported Saturday.

.George Vera, who weighs around 500 pounds (225 kilogrammes) was originally arrested last week for selling counterfeit CDs, according to the Houston Chronicle newspaper.

A police spokesman told the Chronicle that Vera was searched three times over the course of his arrest and booking at the jail but managed to conceal the handgun with his rolls of fat until it was discovered in the shower.

Vera has been charged with possession of an illegal weapon in a correctional facility, which carries a penalty of two to 10 years in prison, but is currently free on bail of 10,000 dollars.
